Back in the olden days voting for a video didn't reload the page in Safari... it sucks that with all this web 2.0 niceness happening on the sift now Safari support seems to have regressed back to the dark ages.

Right. I'm just going to say this once to get it off my chest and then I'm going to drop the subject (as you'll all be pleased to hear).
Now, it's not the first time that any of us have had to think about the issue of self-linking and it won't be the last. It's clearly sketchy territory as the previous posts have demonstrated. There are those who feel that the rules should apply strictly to everyone and those who think that special allowances should be made.
On one hand we see a users rank effecting how rules are applied (though this is actually implicit in the no instant banning of gold star members rule anyway) even though they know full well that their actions are forbidden, while on the other hand we see a naive user banned within half an hour for breaking the same rule. I understand that the intention is different in each case - and that clearly plays a role in how it's handled.
Personally I think a conversation should have been entered into in which the rules were either revised/clarified or upheld. When neither of those things happen this whole incident risks being tagged with a very dirty title - hypocrisy.
I genuinely don't think that the user involved was anything but the best intentioned with his actions which I why I don't think a banning is appropriate. Unfortunately, where other users are concerned in the future that's not always going to be the case. If nothing else, I hope everyone has a think about the precedent that has been set. VideoSift is getting more popular by the day and as such it's becoming more and more of a suitable mechanism for those who lacking in scruples. I can only hope that we're able to expose and hinder the attempts of such individuals (and more importantly, organisations) caught sneaking around the system in the months to come.
The sift is one of the first true great social networks of the web revolution. We all love it, that's why we're here. We've all gotten to know the other people out there in some capacity, hell, I've even met some of you in person and I know full well what a great bunch of people are involved in making this little society what it is.
Anyway, the sift has spoken and I'm happy to accept the communities judgement on the matter (though I had to air my 2c first before I could feel right about it all). I hope nobody gets offended by what I've said (including what was said prior to this) - you know I love being a part of everything videosift entails, tiffs 'n all (actually - tiffs especially
).
Right. 'Nuff said.
